Get Out of the Sand Trap
Ever have difficulty getting out of a sand trap or greenside bunker? Here are a few simple tips to help you feel more comfortable about your next sand encounter:
Clubface: When in the sand, you want to position the clubface to the right of your target. In other words, “open the clubface”. When you take your grip, rotate the club with the fingers of your right hand not your entire grip. This will help add loft to your shot and provides a greater chance for the club to bounce from the club’s sole and back edge with more desirable results. It’s important not to turn you hands to create an open clubface as turned hands encourage “digging” into the sand with the club and not achieving the desired goal….a solid shot out of the sand.
Stance: Your stance in the sand should be wider (as with your driver). This will allow your upper body to rotate through the shot. Keep your knees bent so that your legs stay still so that you can glide the clubface under the ball. Your feet and shoulders should be positions left of the target. The ball should be forward in your stance lined up with the inside of your left heel. Your goal is to hit the sand first, then the ball for a high, soft shot.
Accelerate: When hitting the sand shot, accelerate the clubface through the sand while turning your shoulders. Your goal is for your finish position to result in your chest pointing to the left of the target.
